The CHOICE Study’s Successful First Year
Welcome to our update on the CHOICE Study’s successful first year!
Recruitment and enrollment of study participants exceeded our goals when we enrolled our 40th participant on September 21st of 2015, three months ahead of prediction. Our efforts to increase outreach in the Philadelphia area, resulted in a dramatic increase in the percentage of non-white study participants. To further round out our participant base, we also began recruiting from cancer registry lists in September.
Our funding organization, Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI), conducted a site visit on September 30th, declaring the CHOICE Study’s progress “outstanding”. PCORI also chose the CHOICE Study as one of four trials involving cancer to present at its first annual conference in Washington, DC on October 7th. Dr. Mao, assisted by one of the patient co-investigators, Jodi, presented the CHOICE Study in a breakout session at the conference, and also participated in video and phone interviews for a future feature on PCORI’s website.
As we look into 2016, we are very excited to announce the CHOICE Study will add a second site at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. This will help us reach our recruitment target of 120 participants, as well as finish recruitment for the qualitative research component of the study. At our patient and stakeholder meetings, held every six months, we will hear details about the trial protocol paper’s submission and publication, as well as other presentations on methods of research. Dr. Mao will be commuting back and forth monthly to meet with the study team as well as attend future patient advisor and stakeholder meetings.
This blog, maintained by patient co-investigator, Jodi and Dr. Garland, will continue to provide relevant information each month. We look forward to another successful year in 2016!
